How signing an OPSEU card will help trigger a vote

While the process of joining a union may seem complicated, it is actually straightforward when broken into smaller steps.

Under the Ontario Labour Relations Act, any group of employees who wish to join a union must show an official interest in doing so. The way that is accomplished is by signing a union card. If at least 40 per cent of the employees in your workplace sign union cards, then and ONLY then can the union file an application to the Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB).

Within seven working days of receiving the application, the OLRB must hold a secret ballot vote at the workplace. Once the votes are counted, if more than 50 per cent of the ballots cast are in favour of the union, then the union becomes your new bargaining agent.

If you’d like to sign a card in person to bring the vote, come by OPSEU Local 596, Room Podium 247A or call Kiera Chion, an Organizing Rep and a former part-time worker at Ryerson University at 416-526-0330.
